How do you load a lever action grease gun?
STAR lever action grease guns support four loading methods: cartridge, bulk, suction and filler pump. For standard 400g (14 oz.) cartridge loading, pull back the plunger rod, unscrew the barrel head, insert the cartridge open-end first, reassemble and release the rod. For bulk filling, use a grease bucket pump connected to the filler plug. After loading, always pump the lever 6 to 8 times with the head loosened slightly to release air pockets before use.
What size grease cartridge fits a standard grease gun?
Standard lever action grease guns accept 400g (14 oz.) grease cartridges with a 57.15 mm (2 1/4 inch) diameter, which is the most common size worldwide. For the Australian and New Zealand market, 450g cartridges are the standard. Our S-716 Australian Model is specifically designed for 450g cartridges. Standard lever action grease guns generate between 6,000 and 10,000 PSI. What is the difference between lever and pistol grease guns?
Lever action grease guns use a full-length lever stroke to generate higher pressure (up to 12,000 PSI) and more grease per stroke (1 to 2 grams), making them ideal for heavy-duty continuous lubrication. Pistol grip grease guns use a trigger mechanism for one-handed operation (3,000 to 10,000 PSI, 0.4 to 0.68g per stroke), which is better for tight spaces and lighter tasks. Both are essential lubrication equipment. The choice depends on application demands.
How do I fix an air lock in a grease gun?
An air lock is the most common reason a grease gun stops pumping. First, loosen the barrel head half a turn to let trapped air escape. Pump the lever 8 to 10 times. If grease still won't flow, open the air bleeder valve (small screw on the gun head) while pumping. For stubborn air locks, remove the barrel completely, pull the plunger rod back, and reattach. Air locks typically happen after loading a new cartridge or when the gun has been stored for a long time.
How many pumps of grease does a fitting need?
Most standard grease fittings (zerk fittings) need 3 to 5 pumps from a lever action grease gun, which delivers approximately 1 to 2 grams per stroke. Stop when you see fresh grease starting to push out around the seal. This means the old grease has been purged and the bearing is fully packed. Can you mix different types of grease in a grease gun?

How do you get a stuck grease coupler off a fitting?
First release the pressure by disconnecting the hose or opening the bleeder valve. Never pull a coupler off under pressure. Then twist the coupler while pulling straight back. If it's still stuck, use a flat screwdriver to gently pry the coupler jaws open. To prevent this, use a locking grease coupler which has a release mechanism built in. What is the difference between NLGI 1 and NLGI 2 grease?
NLGI 2 is the standard, general purpose grease used in most automotive and industrial applications. It has a consistency similar to peanut butter.
