Why Choose Rotary Barrel Pumps & Drum Pumps?

Barrel pumps (drum pumps) are essential for safely and efficiently transferring liquids from 15 to 55 gallon drums without lifting, tilting or pouring. A rotary barrel pump uses a hand crank to generate flow, while a lever barrel pump uses a reciprocating handle. Both types eliminate spills, reduce waste and protect operators from chemical exposure.

Choosing the right material is critical for any chemical barrel pump application. Cast iron pumps (S-405A series, 7 variants) handle petroleum-based products, motor oils, diesel and kerosene with dual-directional operation for emptying and refilling. Stainless steel pumps (S-408, S-409) handle acids, chemicals, antifreeze, urea (DEF) and water-based media. Plastic rotary pumps come in two variants: S-410 (PPCP body with Viton seals for oils) and S-411 (Ryton body with Viton seals for aggressive chemicals). For precision oiling, see our oil cans and hand pump oilers.

Why Choose STAR Barrel Pumps?

  • Cast iron rotary pumps (S-405 to S-407, 7 variants) with dual-directional operation and single or 3-piece rigid suction pipes
  • Stainless steel (SS304 and SS316) rotary pumps for chemicals, acids, antifreeze, urea (DEF) and water-based media
  • Lever barrel pumps: S-412 standard (NBR seals, oil-based), S-414 antifreeze (Viton seals, chemicals), S-412CL clear tube (polycarbonate). All 300 ml per stroke
  • Plastic rotary pumps: PPCP body for oils (S-410) and Ryton/glass-filled PP for chemicals (S-411)
  • Clear tube variant (S-412-CL) for visual flow monitoring during transfer
  • Fits 50 to 205 litre (15 to 55 gallon) drums with 1 inch (F), 3/4 inch (F) and 1.25 inch (F) bung adapters
  • Custom OEM branding, logo printing and packaging for distributors
  • Exporting to 27+ countries with flexible MOQs and FOB pricing

Complete Range of Barrel Pumps & Drum Pumps

Our barrel pump range covers every fluid transfer application. The S-405A cast iron rotary pump delivers up to 4 litres per turn (1 gallon per turn) for petroleum products. The S-408 (SS304) and S-409 (SS316) stainless steel pumps handle corrosive chemicals with PTFE seals. The S-412 lever barrel pump outputs 300 ml (10 oz) per stroke with a ribbed aluminium die-cast head, zinc die-cast body and brass internals. Standard model uses NBR seals for oil-based fluids. The S-414 antifreeze model uses Viton seals for 100% antifreeze, thinners, automotive additives and industrial chemicals. The S-412CL clear tube uses a polycarbonate barrel for visual flow monitoring.

Frequently Asked Questions: Barrel Pumps & Drum Pumps

What is a rotary barrel pump?

A rotary barrel pump (also called a drum pump or hand crank pump) is a manual pump that transfers liquids from drums and barrels using a rotating handle mechanism. The pump inserts into the drum bung opening and uses internal vanes or gears to move fluid as you turn the crank. STAR rotary barrel pumps deliver up to 4 litres per turn and fit standard 15, 30 and 55 gallon drums.

What is the difference between a rotary pump and a lever barrel pump?

A rotary barrel pump uses a continuous cranking motion to generate steady flow, while a lever barrel pump uses an up-and-down reciprocating handle that delivers a measured amount per stroke. Our rotary pumps (S-405A, S-408, S-409, S-410, S-411) are better for high-volume transfer. The lever pump (S-412) delivers 300 ml per stroke and is better for controlled, measured dispensing of oils and fuels.

Cast iron vs stainless steel barrel pump: which do I need?

Cast iron pumps (S-405A) are designed for petroleum-based products: motor oil, diesel, kerosene, heating oil and hydraulic fluid. Stainless steel pumps (S-408 in SS304, S-409 in SS316) are required for chemicals, acids, antifreeze, urea (DEF), solvents and water-based media. Using a cast iron pump with corrosive chemicals will damage the pump and contaminate the fluid. When in doubt, choose stainless steel for chemical compatibility.

Can I use a barrel pump for chemicals?

Yes, but only with the correct material. Our stainless steel pumps (S-408, S-409) with PTFE seals handle acids, chemicals, antifreeze and solvents. The S-411 plastic rotary pump uses a Ryton (PPS) body with 40% glass-filled polypropylene handle and Viton seals for aggressive chemicals. Never use cast iron or standard plastic pumps with corrosive chemicals.

What drum sizes do barrel pumps fit?

STAR barrel pumps fit standard 15 gallon (57 litre), 30 gallon (114 litre) and 55 gallon (208 litre) drums. The pump tube length is designed for 55 gallon drums. For smaller drums, the pump still works but won't reach the bottom. Bung adapters are available in 1 inch (F), 3/4 inch (F) and 2 inch (F) to fit different drum openings.

What is a clear tube barrel pump?

The S-412-CL clear tube lever barrel pump has a transparent barrel that lets you see the fluid flowing during transfer. This is useful for monitoring flow rate, checking for air bubbles and confirming the fluid type visually. It uses the same 300 ml per stroke mechanism as the standard S-412 lever pump.

What fluids can I transfer with a barrel pump?

Depending on the model: motor oil, diesel, kerosene, heating oil, hydraulic fluid, transmission fluid (cast iron models), or acids, chemicals, antifreeze, urea/DEF, solvents, lacquer, thinner, water-based media (stainless steel and chemical-grade plastic models). The S-412 lever pump handles oil-based fluids, heating oils, motor oils, heavy and light oils, diesel and kerosene. Always match the pump material to the fluid being transferred.

How do I maintain a barrel pump?

After each use, run clean fluid through the pump to flush residual product. For chemical pumps, flush with a compatible solvent. Inspect seals periodically and replace if you notice leaks or reduced suction. Store the pump vertically with the tube end capped to prevent contamination. Cast iron pumps should be stored dry to prevent rust. Stainless steel and plastic pumps are corrosion-resistant and require less maintenance.

What is the difference between S-410 and S-411 plastic pumps?

The S-410 uses a PPCP (polypropylene copolymer) body with Viton seals and a steel shaft, designed for oils and petroleum-based fluids. The S-411 uses a Ryton (PPS) body with 40% glass-filled polypropylene handle, Viton seals and a stainless steel shaft, designed for aggressive chemicals. The S-411 offers superior chemical resistance but at a higher cost. Choose based on the fluid you need to transfer.
